We are passionate about the environment. That is why reducing our environmental impact is one of the three big goals of our strategy for sustainable business – the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP). Our key USLP commitments are to help more than a billion people take action to improve their health and well-being; to halve the environmental footprint of the making and use of our products; and to enhance the livelihoods of millions of people as we grow our business.
Sourcing our agricultural raw materials sustainably can help us support climate action and improve people's livelihoods, while improving quality and strengthening our supply chains.
Example of our work in Sustainability in China:
Since 2009 we have worked with selected green tea gardens building their capability to implement Sustainable Agricultural Practices that meet the strict requirements of the Rainforest Alliance certification scheme.
This certification scheme covers farmer safety and welfare as well as chemical management. In line with this certification and Unilever’s Sustainable Agriculture Standard, pesticide use is strictly managed.
So far, five green tea gardens have achieved this certification complying to our sourcing requirements and opening up new opportunities for them on the international market.
Since 2014, we have been actively sharing our experiences in working with suppliers on sustainable garden management with others in the tea manufacturing industry.
In a joint initiative with Shanghai Municipality, Unilever China is committed to support sustainable tea growing in Zunyi and Qiandongnan, Guizhou province. This collaboration was launched in May 2017.
